2012 Legislative Session
Cheri’s 2012 Priorities:
As a small business owner myself, I believe that small and local businesses are the heart and soul of our communities and are essential to our state’s economic future. I am thrilled to be co-leading the bi-partisan Economic Vitality Caucus which brings together legislators and businesspeople from across the state to discuss the intersection of business and public policy. As always, I hope to continue to foster an environment here in Colorado that helps business provide jobs and stability to our local economy.
In addition to the Economic Vitality Caucus at the state level, I have been pleased to be involved locally as well. Wheat Ridge has been holding monthly “Connecting the Dots” meetings to help local organizations and businesses network and discuss issues relevant to the community.
A sneak peek of some upcoming legislation!
SB 77: Yellow Gold!
I introduced a bill that will simplify the yellow grease industry to make it more friendly to small and local businesses. They are already under stringent regulations and these additional rules are causing our small start ups to close down. I am a strong believer in keeping our environment safe and believe the additional regulations are appropriate for the toxic brown grease, but not the yellow grease that can be recycled. Yellow grease can be recycled into a valuable commodity and even refined into bio-diesel.
HB 1051: Consumer Protection
I am sponsoring a bill in the House that would require consumers to be notified if a car has been totalled by an insurance company, fixed, and then subsequently resold. This is a common sense solution to a rampant and unfair practice. Current statutes do not require notation on the car’s title if it is being salvaged for resale after an accident. Law enforcement has also identified this issue as a major problem regarding auto thefts.
HB 1097: Civil Penalties
This bill closes a loophole in the Colorado statute regarding restaurant license revocation. It requires that local health departments first levy civil penalties against restaurants who have code violations before pulling their license. Due process is essential to keep small businesses from being unfairly closed before they have the chance to bring their business up to code.
