After weather damped festivities last year, the 40th annual Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival this past weekend was considered a smash.

"It was a smashing success," said Cheri Jahn, chairwoman of the festival committee. "It was the highest turnout we've ever had. We're more than thrilled."

Jahn said the staggering attendance was evident from the number of food vendors who ran out of food, and reorders because the beer garden sold out of beer and wine Friday night. She said the adult carnival rides and two nights of fireworks attracted the masses.
